FEBS Open Bio Special Issue Cover

Mitochondrial Biogenesis.

In the fall of 2024, I had the opportunity to design the cover artwork for FEBS Open Bio, an open-access scientific journal published by the Federation of European Biochemical Societies. My goal as an artist was to represent mitochondria as the "beating heart" of the cell, a metaphor that goes beyond the traditional idea of mitochondria simply being the "powerhouse" of the cell.

There's such a thing as hard feelings.

There is such a thing as hard feelings. Our emotions, a necessary survival mechanism, are persisting forces that manipulate our decisions and therefore, our life. The neuroscience of emotion reveals a way out, or rather a loophole: our thoughts actively shape how we respond to and experience emotion. At the neural level, our prefrontal cortex neurons, depicted to the left in bright yellow gold colors transmit excitatory signals down to the amygdala intercalated cells (light blue). These intercalated cells drawn blue in the center represent densely packed GABAergic inhibitory neurons acting as the gatekeeper of the basolateral amygdala (to the right with ochre yellow stain). They provide feedforward inhibition of amygdala neurons (to the right red colored neurons). This top-down control helps us override our dispositions and break free of learned emotional responses.

Another player in the circuit is an interneuron (light purple) that activates when experiencing emotionally charged events. Interneurons regulate by suppression of amygdala excitatory neurons (red colored neurons), making sure we don’t misinterpret stimuli such as acting like a reward is a threat, or a threat is a reward. The challenge of chronic stress in our generation is the tie to interneuron dysfunction (dark purple), contributing to hyperactive amygdala activity (represented in black) and increased risk for mental health disorders.

Room For Imagination

Gold Key Award-Winning Oil Painting

Art is deeply intertwined with human emotion and psychology, serving as a powerful medium to express personal experiences and stories. As a creative artist, I strive to weave my own journey into compelling visual narratives.

To the right is an oil painting I created to depict myself as a child, capturing my perspective of the world through bold, contrasting colors. This work reflects the uninhibited creativity of childhood, when we are free from the constraints of societal expectations and conformity, allowing us to think outside the box and tap into our natural genius. It earned a Gold Key award from the Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards, placing in the top 5-7% of entries out of 340,000 submissions.

As a science communicator, my artwork bridges the world of scientific discovery with my artistic foundation, bringing both fields together to tell stories that are as visually engaging as they are informative.

Talaromycosis

Life Cycle Graphic with Dr. Le

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Le at Duke University, a physician-scientist specializing in Mycology and infectious diseases, with a focus on Talaromyces marneffei. This disease is prevalent in Southeast Asia, particularly in China, Thailand, and Vietnam, where it causes large-scale epidemics. Talaromycosis is a severely neglected and under-researched pathogen, primarily affecting immunocompromised individuals. Our communication allowed me to create hand-drawn depictions of different mold and yeast forms of Talaromycosis unique to the fungus.

Unconditionally, then.

My art is a celebration of unconditional love. In my paintings, purple, yellow, and pink explore the nature of relationships. Yellows represent giving joy, purples embody mature experience and conflict, and pinks signify the innocent receiving of love. This triad defines unconditional love: the balance needed to selflessly give and accept affection while embracing flaws on both sides.

By “coloring the unconditional” — from objects like puzzle boxes, swings, and elephant statues to family dishes, neighborhood streets, and familiar spaces— my art spotlights the overlooked sources of love that can ground us. Their ordinary beauty reignites a view of the world that doesn’t strive for efficiency or perfection, but for wonder in the everyday moments. I invite the viewer to join me, reframing the turbulent world around us into colorful scenes not bounded by strings.
